The Honolulu Chapter of the National Infragard Members Alliance, in association with the Hawaii Department of Education is assisting the DHS with a special one day introductory Cyber Security training course taught by expert trainers from the Department of Homeland Security.
This full day workshop will cover:

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month - "Our Shared Responsibility"
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) have designated each October as National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
The security of the Internet is dependant on each one of us. We must all do our share in protecting the computers and networks that we use. This year's theme "Our Shared Responsibility" focuses on the steps that each one of us should follow to protect ourselves on the Internet.

Breaking News - The official date for The 2010 Internet Safety Awards, sponsored by Infragard Hawaii, along with the Hawaii State Department of Education has been set for Friday, April 16, 2010 and will once again, take place again at Farrington High School.
FBI Citizens Academy - Nominations now open - Once again, the Honolulu FBI office is looking for nominations of individuals to attend the FBI Citizen's Academy. October 2009 is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NSCAM), which the FBI endorses and participates. The NSCAM event has been held every October since 2001, as a national awareness campaign to encourage everyone to protect their computers and our nation's critical cyber infrastructure.
Cyber security requires vigilance 365 days per year. However, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the National Cyber Security Alliance, and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, coordinate to shed a brighter light in October on what home users, schools, businesses and governments need to do in order to protect their computers, children, and data.

The 2010 Internet Safety Awards - It's Happening!!!
The 2010 Internet Safety Awards, sponsored by Infragard Hawaii, along with the Hawaii State Department of Education and others is now in full planning stage. The tentative date for the event has been moved until Friday, March 5, 2010 and will take place again at Farrington High School. We are actively looking for sponsors and volunteers to help make the event another great success as has been the case in the last 2 years. Charlene B. Thornton Named Special Agent in Charge of FBI Honolulu Division
Charlene B. Thornton has been named Special Agent in Charge (SAC) of the FBI’s Honolulu Division. Director Robert S. Mueller, III appointed her to this position to replace SAC Janet Kammerman, who was recently appointed Associate Executive Assistant Director of the Human Resources Branch at FBI Headquarters. Most recently, Ms. Thornton served as SAC of the San Francisco Division.
Ms. Thornton entered on duty as an FBI special agent in 1979. Upon completion of training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, she conducted a variety of criminal, counterintelligence, and counterterrorism investigations at the Indianapolis and Los Angeles Divisions. In 1985, she was promoted to a supervisory position in the Legal Counsel Division at FBI Headquarters, where she assisted in the defense of the FBI and FBI employees. In 1989, she became Chief of the Legal Research Unit, responsible for providing legal advice and guidance to FBI executives and field offices.
Mrs. Thornton left FBI Headquarters in 1991 to return to the field. After three years supervising applicant, civil rights, white collar crime, and violent crime squads in the Baltimore Division, she was promoted to Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Honolulu Division in 1995. While there, she managed all investigative programs and had primary responsibility for administrative management. She also oversaw the FBI's extraterritorial investigations throughout Asia and the Pacific.
In 1997, Ms. Thornton returned to FBI Headquarters as Deputy General Counsel, overseeing the FBI's legal training, forfeiture, and legal advice programs. She served in that role until 1999, when she moved to the FBI’s Inspection Division. As an Inspector, she was responsible for overseeing comprehensive audits of the FBI's investigative and administrative operations.
Ms. Thornton was named SAC of the Birmingham Division in 2000. In that capacity, she directed all FBI operations in the Northern District of Alabama. In 2002, she assumed the duties of SAC Phoenix, responsible for all FBI operations in the state of Arizona. She served in Phoenix until 2004, when she was appointed Assistant Director of the Inspection Division at FBI Headquarters. In that role she was responsible for the oversight of internal investigations of employee misconduct, as well as for evaluating the FBI’s investigative, financial, and administrative programs. In 2006, she was named SAC of the San Francisco Division.
Ms. Thornton graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana, with a degree in Political Science and Economics. She earned a Juris Doctorate, with honors, from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, and a Masters of Law in Taxation from the University of San Diego Law School. She is a graduate of the National Executive Institute and is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2005, Mrs. Thornton was awarded the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive in recognition of her sustained high level of achievement in managing demanding and multifaceted FBI operations.

The 2009 Internet Safety Awards are in full swing. This is one of Infragard Hawaii's most important projects year round. This year's event is going to be fantastic with terrific new videos by the talented students around the state and fabulous prizes provided by our generous sponsors.
One thing of which we are very proud is that our President, Chris Duque, former HPD detective for 25 years has been awarded the FBI's Directors Community Leadership Award for 2008. Chris will travel to Washington DC FBI Headquarters
to receive the award personally from Robert H Mueller, Director FBI.

Infragard Members and Friends...The FBI is interested in our recommendations for potential candidates to attend the Class of 2009 Citizens’ Academy, scheduled to begin January 20, 2009. Classes will be held on six consecutive Tuesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.. The seventh session will be 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2009, and the graduation is tentatively scheduled for the evening of Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Class size is limited to approximately 18 members.
Potential candidates must meet the following criteria:
¨ Be recognized as a business or civic leader;
¨ Reside and/or work within the field division’s territory;
¨ Be at least 21 years of age;
¨ Have no prior felony convictions;
¨ Have no misdemeanor convictions within 6 months prior to application;
¨ Consent to a background investigation - indices/criminal checks;
¨ Be prepared to execute a non-disclosure of information agreement;
¨ Agree to attend all sessions, with only one absence allowed.

October has been designated as National Cyber Security Awareness Month to bring attention to the importance of protecting yourself, your family and your information online.
Every October, the National Cyber Security Division of Homeland Security coordinates with states, universities and the private sector to educate the public and provide tools to help them engage in safe online activities. Through education on cyber security, American will be empowered to protect themselves online and protect their computer from being used to attack others.
By protecting yourself on the Internet, you also protect others.
Partnerships are the Key to National Cyber Security Awareness Month
Homeland Security has key awareness partners to help effectively educate all citizens. These partnerships make National Cyber Security Awareness Month happen by bringing multiple events and people to participate in this national event. These key partners are:
